Artificial intelligence (AI) now sits quietly in the background of daily life. It answers questions, recommends content, assists diagnosis, and increasingly shapes decisions that matter. Many of us are comfortable using AI for low-stakes tasks like information gathering, yet hesitate when consequences escalate. We are happy to ask a chatbot for research help, but would think twice before trusting AI to drive a car. This selective trust is not contradictory; it reflects a broader public intuition that AI’s power demands proportionate safeguards.
Trust in AI cannot emerge automatically from technical sophistication. It is the case that AI systems often function as ‘black boxes’, producing outputs through complex processes that even their creators struggle to explain. This opacity makes trust both essential and fragile. While human-like interaction, such as polite language, encouragement and responsiveness, can foster emotional comfort, it is not enough. People ultimately trust systems that are reliable and deployed by institutions they respect. Having positive utility value also builds confidence.
Confidence in AI systems for the public’s benefit means that AI governance frameworks are now converging on three foundational pillars essential for AI systems:
* First, transparency and explainability, which reduces uncertainty by ensuring there is a baseline understanding available about the AI system.
* Second, technical robustness and safety, so as to ensure AI systems perform consistently and resists failure, error or manipulation.
* Third, accountability, which clarifies who is responsible when things go wrong, enabling auditing and redress, but also lawful deployment in the first place.
These developments show that as AI increasingly plays a role in decision making, trust can no longer rely on goodwill alone. Accordingly, regulation is catching up, as seen in requirements for risk-based oversight and mandatory transparency documentation. Society is now saying confidence in AI systems should only grow when responsibility of AI processes is enforceable. This means ultimately trustworthy AI is not about persuading people to believe in machines, it is about designing systems that actually deserve belief. So in relation to the three foundational pillars: transparency, safety and accountability, they are not constraints on innovation — they are its preconditions.
